This survey of James Stirling's architectural work selected by the architect is published on the occasion of his receipt of two of architecture's premier awards, the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture 1980, and the Pritzker Architecture Prize 1981.
• In the United Kingdom, the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture has been bestowed on architects of international stature since the year 1848. The Gold Medal for 1980 was presented to James Stirling at the Royal Institute of British Architects on 24 June 1980.
• The Pritzker Prize has been established in the United States of America as architecture's Nobel Prize. The award to James Stirling was announced in New York on 15 April 1981. The presentation followed on 29 May 1981, at the National Building Museum in Washington DC.
• The introduction by Norman Foster, James Stirling's response and the concluding address of Mark Girouard on the occasion of the award ceremony of the Gold Medal are reproduced here in full, together with the Commendation and James Stirling's speech of acceptance of the Pritzker Prize. In addition there are critical contributions by Robert Maxwell, Charles Jencks, Paul Goldberger and Ada Louise Huxtable.
